Will having a CA medical marijuana card interfere with my wanting to join the military?
I am looking into becoming an officer once I graduate college but I don’t want this to interfere! I would pass the drug test and of course not use marijuana during my service time (it’s for insomnia) but would they look into my doctor’s records about this?
P.S.-Pease don’t give me any anti-marijuana propaganda or anything else of that nature, thanks!
While the legal gap decreases with every state victory, there remains a prevalent misconception that marijuana is a... Read More »

OK, the bottom line is if you have to have medical marijuina then you’re not fit for military service. Its that simple. No ifs no ands no butts, you’re 4F
I honestly don’t think there is a precedent for this scenario. I do know that having smoked marijuana is not in and of itself a disqualification. Now, the real question will be how your insomnia will affect your application for the service.
I’d go to your doctor and find something else to help with insomnia cause you are going to need something else while on active duty and then don’t use it anymore. So your system will be clear. They shouldn’t pull your medical records. I say shouldn’t because depending on what type of officer you end up and your clearance level they may find out more about you than you ever thought you knew.
The military is very strict on it’s anti-drug rule. Even if it were more lenient, you’d still probably not be able to join if you have (or had) a medical condition that needed marijuana.
As long as you don’t bring up MJ and never write that you have smoked it you will be fine.
Unless you have to take a lie detector test… then good luck!
I do not recommend you lie….. and if you admit to your use of marijuana I seriously doubt they will enlist you……and I have even greater doubts you can be a commissioned officer….. but you lose nothing by trying
The medical processing paperwork …..if I remember correctly ….will ask you directly if you have used any controlled substances…..and specifically marijuana….. in that you are a registered marijuana user lying would be very dumb (note; only thing the military hates MORE than a drug user…..is a liar)….. the conduct standards for officers is even higher than that required to simply enlist
Good luck
Yeah like dude…You are already Dq’d…
They really don’t want drug addicts in the service,
and MJ is an illegal Drug…
Yes it will. Although the medical marijuana is legal in California it is against federal law.
I don’t know what medical checks the military will do. Maybe your just your regular doctor. I am assuming he was not the one that was involved in the medical marijuana decision. I guess you went to one of the clinics that charged around $100 to get the authorization for the card. Then you had to go to your county health department to get the card, for around $400. If the military only checks with you regular doctor and does not find out about the clinic or check with the county you may be OK.
Best bet is to through away the card and the pot. Stay clean. You then can lie about your use. Of course if you get caught it will mean a discharge for fraudulent enlistment.
You should have went to Benadryl to help you sleep. Or I find a bit of whiskey really helps.
Good luck. I hope you make it.
