I live in the Netherlands, where it has been decriminalized, but here I only know one person who uses it. I have the idea it is more used in the States – whenever I watch an American (teenage) movie, I see people using marihuana!

Americans like mood altering substances. The amount of taxes brought in from alcohol sales could be doubled if they added MaryJane as well.
It’s been observed that in countries where marijuana has been decriminalized, such as yours and Portugal, illicit drug use actually declines. I have no explanation for that phenomenon.
Some people who smoke marijuana do not do so recreationally, but for relief of illness symptoms. The Drug Enforcement Agency (an arm of the US government) more or less dictates how doctors can treat their patients, making it extremely difficult to prescribe appropriate medication for pain relief. Since marijuana is readily available and cheaper than many pharmaceuticals, albeit illegal in most states, many opt to go that route.
As far as movies go, that’s fantasy. Not everyone in America smokes pot and in fact, while many have tried it, fewer (comparatively speaking) smoke it on a regular basis “just because”.
