When marijuana is legalized, will the military be allowed to use it?
I am not looking for negative remarks, yes I am in the Air Force, and yes,I a a FORMER marijuana user and remain an advocate for it’s legalization. I say “when” it is legalized because I feel it WILL be legal with 20 years now that the door is open and the facts are coming out. However,my question is,will its use be allowed, similar to alcohol now,in the military?
I don’t think so. It would weaken the soldiers.
Off duty, like alcohol.
If it were legalized, yes.
No. I don’t believe the military (actually Congress) will allow it. Homosexuality is “legal” yet look at our stance…
if it becomes legalized by some miracle you still will not be allowed to use it while on duty like alcohol [legal] you cannot drink while on duty
hollyy
that’s a hard one – they would have to declassify it from being a hallucinogenic narcotic first

There are bills before congress now. We have to make small steps to achieve the legalization of cannabis. Call or write your congress men.
The military position since the Vietnam War has been that “drug use is incompatible with military service”.
Of course, the 3 martini lunch at the O-club was cool into the 80s.
Think about this, troops stationed in de-criminalized countries, like the Netherlands, are still prohibited from smoking grass. My hunch is that the prohibition would continue until it was well proven in the civilian world that it was less harmful than alcohol. Or until the JCS was populated by ex-teen pot smokers. Whichever comes first.
Zero Tolerance. that’s all there is to it.
Answer this:
Would you want someone who is high to be responsible for watching your back?
That stated, if it were to become legal, there wouldn’t be a great deal the military could do about usage. The same charges for being drunk on duty would apply.
one of the many reason that our Armed Forces would become the joke of the entire world by making us look like we all High and Happy and Fun Loving lol…., and if others nations dont Fear our military its like putting a bulleye in the US MAP.
honestly a good question, but only time will tell.
the military does list a few completely legal substances as illegal…like creatine, hydroxicut, etc (anything that has not been FDA approved actually). although that is NEVER enforced. but they dont really do piss tests for those.
if its no longer an illegal substance then if anyone did piss hot, they would have a pretty solid defense by saying “i did it when i was on leave or when i was off duty.” the military would probably have to make you sign something (theyd just throw it in small print in the middle of your contract) that you recognize that the military considers it to be an illegal substance still and you are not allowed to use it.
then again, congress might pass a bill saying its ok for the military. who knows? the farthest i could see it going is the same as drinking: off duty only
If is the main part of it, No is the short answer, the military has a very strict no tolerance policy for things like that. It would affect soldiers ability to perform duties. Main reason for the strict policy.
To begin with just because something is legal in the civilian world doesn’t make it legal in the military world. In the civilian word it is illegal to posses marijuana, but not illegal to fail a drug test. Under UCMJ it is actually illegal to fail a drug test. This brings in something a former poster said. If you do fail a urinalysis, how would you be able to say “Yeah I did smoke, but it was when I was off duty”? You can’t prove that. So for that reason I believe if marijuana became legal in the civilian world, UCMJ regulations wouldn’t change.
Seriously the Air Force does not need stoners like you. No, it will not be legal in 20 years.
