I recently went to a hookah lounge, and there were all different flavors and some people had marijuana, but what is the usual smoke?

First Marijuana isn’t legal. Hookah is not meant for marijuana and gives us hookah smokers a bad reputation.
It’s flavored tobacco that is cooked not burned by charcoal then is slightly filtered and cooled by water and smoked.
It depends on what country you live in. In the US, many people find the illegal substance that you noted as being wasted in a hookah. However, you can find several hundreds of the tobaccos that you’re questioning. It’s usually tobacco, with no additives [unlike cigarettes] meaning no tar, and very very little nicotine. [Usually around .04 %] The tobacco is called “shisha” and can be flavored to taste like nearly anything. I’ve had the best luck with the site below. Also, if you register for it, and you post up, you’ll earn points that save you money on your purchases.
I highly doubt at a legitimate hookah lounge people were smoking marijuana from the hookah. Hookahs are not, and never were, designed with use of marijuana in mind. Hookahs are not bongs and, as such, should not be used except for their intended purpose which is the smoking of a type of tobacco called shisha. There are other types of tobaccos smoked from the hookah as well such as moa’ssel, but that is traditional Middle Eastern tobacco which differs slightly from the Starbuzz and Al Fakher we are used to here in the States. It’s definitely not for the hookah novice, as traditional moa’ssel will knock you on your rear.
