What is the point of passing the proposition to legalize marijuana if its still illegal under federal law?
Im actually for it but I dont understand what legalizing it will do if it’s still illegal under federal law. Doesnt that mean if you get pulled over and you have any you can still get arrested even if it’s legal? Whats the point?

So everyone can laugh when the stoners get excited for all of 3 minutes and then realize that absolutely nothing has changed.
City Government is not state government is not federal government. Each state is allowed to make their own laws, whether or not they agree with those of the federal government. State police forces are kept to enforcing the laws of their state. So if the proposition to legalize marijuana was passed then it means that if you were caught with weed by a state official, then you would not receive a felony drub charge. However if you were unlucky enough to be busted by federal authorities, well all bets are off.
It is so California will not use taxes for marijuana matters, such as pothead control and other drug treatments. It cost at least $40 for 1 hour busting a pothead with 1 joint. Then there is court cost. Referrals to drug treatment programs, which will no longer exist etc.
The federal cops can’t bust every recreational user/grower. And the feds can’t make the locals enforce a federal law. So except for the big time growers and merchants the rest of California can smoke themselves into a stupor.
There IS a point. California once was the only state allowing medical use of marijuana. Now there are 14 others, and the federal government has been ordered by the President to not meddle with any state’s medical marijuana laws or enforcement. This is a political matter.
The same thing will go for legalization– California will legalize it, and other states will follow. Eventually, the federal government will be forced to stop their drug tyranny and hypocrisy because everyone will see firsthand that prohibition is ludicrous.
Because the Feds don;’t make local arrests. Last year less than 1% of all marijuana arrests were made by federal agents (and most of those were big time growers/traffickers), if its legal in Cali, then state officers can’t make arrests, and they are the ones who almost always make arrests for possession. The DEA doesn’t have the resources to go after people using the drug. Technically medical marijuana users are all subject to being arrested, but yet medical use thrives in states where it is legal, this is b/c the Feds don’t have the time/money/resources to make these arrests.
The Feds have already said that if California’s proposition 19 ( Marijuana) initiative
passes next month, they will completely ignore the law.Otherwise, it will still be
illegal at the Federal level.
