Reasons why Marijuana shouldn’t be legalized?
Hi,
I am writing an essay in language arts, And in my essay I’m going to argue against Proposition 19. I’m going to argue why California should not legalize marijuana. I just need a few ideas and reasons why it should not be legalized, for example: “Studies have shown that marijuana is responsible for a lot of deaths and car accidents annually.” Just an example, but can you give a few of your reason why you think marijuana shouldn’t be legalized, facts. I just need some ideas, Websites if you can, thanks! FACTS!
everyone would be happy
Find all the things it does to peoples’ minds and list those. You could also say it would lead the way to start legalizing other substances. I mean, pot is a drug that alters your mind. Once that is legalized, why not legalize meth? Or crack? “It’s completely different” doesn’t really cut it as an argument since both pot and meth do the same thing on different levels.
Don’t forget to add that once pot is legalized in any way, it will be hard to enforce restrictions such as preventing people from doing it in public.
Hippies! lol
i think pot is about the same as alchohal so if one is legal well…
and theres no such thing as a mean pothead
Sorry, there really are no good reasons. 🙂
…because we don’t need the $1 billion a year we spend on jailing marijuana users?
So stupid.
-It would put at least half of the pharmaceutical companies medicines out of business.
-They would make less money off of cancer patients, since marijuana helps cure and prevent cancer, and is more effective than the medicine we use now.
-America would be more free than it is now. The communists don’t like that.
-The drug cartels would lose a huge amount of profit, and there would be less violence.
-Prisons would make a lot less money, due to the lack of prisoners.
-A lot of businesses would go out of business, since industrial hemp is FAR more useful and efficient than what we are using now.
Fact: Marijuana has never killed a single human being in the history of Earth.
Because freedom of choice is dangerous to establishment.
That being said, for your project (which is an obvious brainwashing attempt by the unioniocratic educational system, btw, you could possibly win points by arguing that “Just Saying No” apparently doesn’t work, never worked and was never even believed to possibly work by its coiners, Ron and Nancy.
The reason it doesn’t work, however, and Im not sure you would want to include this in your paper or not, is that people will always choose to see for themselves what authoritarians such as Democrats and Republicans tell them are “bad”. that is to say people naturally appreciate their own judgments and not recycled opinions based all too often on continuous ignorance.
OTOH, if you’re feeling courageous, you may just want to go for broke, take the lesser grade on content and make a true valid point and possibly even change your teacher’s mind. Just make sure your grammar and format is perfect.
why not talk about how the law was written. the fact that there would be over 500 different versions of the law, because each city gets to decide how much they want to enforce prop 19.
Because I’m high right now.
Probably the biggest reason is that there is no agreed upon production and distribution system. Where would it be grown? Where would it be sold? What standards would apply?
Otherwise there is no justifiable argument to continue prohibition.
Ever heard of the Opium Wars? the same thing that happened in China will happen to us…a large percentage of people will be constantly using marijuana when that happens the country’s productivity will go down dramatically the only difference is we cant go to into an international conflict or war with someone over it because it’s being grown domestically and not smuggled in by British merchants like in China during the 19th century.
Though I am still in support of legalizing marijuana, there are very compelling reasons many physicians, educators, law enforcement officials, and members of the general public were opposed to Proposition 19. Not everyone who opposes the legalization of marijuana is a fear-mongering prude as they are often mocked as being. My mother is a liberal-leaning, open-minded neurologist who is one of the majority of physicians in the state of California against the legalization of marijuana. She does support medical marijuana prescribed by a licensed professional, however. It is a myth propagated by society that marijuana is harmless. For older adults it can be genuinely beneficial, but for those under 25 whose bodies and minds are still growing, it can cause neurological and psychological problems for life. And studies show that if marijuana was legalized, the demographic with the largest spike in use would be amongst adolescents who could readily obtain it from their 18-year-old friends, and young adults under 25. Also, contrary to popular belief, marijuana *is* addictive to some people. Read the second article posted below for an example. I do not believe that your statement about marijuana being responsible for a lot of deaths and accidents annually is accurate, but it’s an irrefutable fact that it can cause harm to many people, and present a problem for society as a whole.
As that article explains, Keith Humphreys, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at Stanford University who recently served as a White House senior advisor on the nation’s drug control policy, is also against legalization too. I think it’s safe to consider him as a credible source.
Like I stated above, I’m in favor of legalizing marijuana, but I think a more balanced perspective about the issue is needed by society. Unfortunately, most just tilt fully to one side or the other and without first putting in the effort to fully educate themselves on the negatives and positives, and invest in hype instead of facts.
Good luck with the paper. : ) There have been several articles about legalizing marijuana in the Stanford Daily, and you can search the archive online. There was also an objective article about the issue in Harvard Magazine last year.

For some reason the links didn’t appear when I posted them under sources, so I’ll try again here:

Hello…
Why Marijuana Should Not Be Legalized
There are over 10,000 scientific studies that prove marijuana is a harmful addictive drug. There is not one reliable study that demonstrates marijuana has any medical value.
Marijuana is an unstable mixture of more than 425 chemicals that convert to thousands when smoked. Many of these chemicals are toxic, psychoactive chemicals which are largely unstudied and appear in uncontrolled strengths.
The harmful consequences of smoking marijuana include, but are not limited to the following: premature cancer, addiction, coordination and perception impairment, a number of mental disorders including depression, hostility and increased aggresiveness, general apathy, memory loss, reproductive disabilities, and impairment to the immune system.
The Food and Drug Administration, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Public Health Service have rejected smoking crude marijuana as a medicine…
You can get more info here:
If they aren’t going to legalize marijuana, then why don’t they make alcohol illegal? I don’t know anyone personally whose life has been ruined by marijuana (or their constant use of it) but I know far too many people who are alcoholics. I don’t smoke weed and I never will, so honestly, it won’t really have an effect on my life if it is legalized. I just find it kind of humorous when people say, “IT IS AN ADDICTIVE DRUG!! WE HAVE TO STOP THE SPREAD OF THIS HORRIBLE MIND ALTERING SUBSTANCE!” Uh…what? Anything can be addictive psychologically, but you are more likely to get addicted to a legal substance…like alcohol, or even prescription meds.
I obviously don’t want them to make alcohol or prescription medication that some people actually need to take, illegal, but I’m just putting it out there. Alcohol is technically a drug…and if you consume it in excess amounts, I’m sure it could cause more problems than weed.
It doesn’t really matter if it’s legalized or not, people are still going to smoke it.
