Questioning medical marijuana’s message to the youth?
I’ve seen this both in the news and heard it mentioned in conversations about the issue. Apparently some think that medical marijuana dispensaries or merely allowing medicinal use of the substance is sending the wrong message to the youth.
I don’t understand this position at all. How is a medical marijuana dispensary going to corrupt the youth any more than a pharmacy filled with many more dangerous drugs? What about liquor stores? Are they sending the wrong message to the youth too? You need a card granted to you from both the state and a doctor because of a medical condition that could be alleviated by marijuana. You simply need a photo ID to buy alcohol at a liquor store.
Some if I’m rambling, can anyone explain this side of the issue to me? I’ve never heard anyone expand upon the point so I don’t understand what they mean.
Recreational drugs from pharmacies? Cough medicine, ritalin, vicoden, valium, oxycotin – need I go on?
Ever heard of a “pharmie?”
If people are wanting to smoke marijuana they are going to, if it’s from a dispensary or if it’s from a hook up.
Here in california they are voting on it in a month or two for it to be legal. I think that will corrupt more kids than a dispensary. Even though I’m sure they are going to have strict legal laws about age requirements etc.
But I don’t know how it will send a wrong message. If a teen wants drugs they will find ways to get it, just like alcohol or different medications.
why would you expect anyone that believes their morals should outweigh a doctors decision as to how to treat their client would have a logical reason for their argument?
sometimes you simply have to accept that people are NOT logical about some topics
Tell me what other pharmaceutical drugs do people take ‘recreationally’? Marijuana is about the only one. Either marijuana is a potent medication or a ‘recreational’ drug. Which one is it to be?
Edit: Do you know what recreational means? You don’t take cough mixture to a party or headache pills to enjoy yourself! They are medicines.
Ordinarily I’d agree with this, but there are some marijuana dispensaries in California that really push the envelope. A drug store might have dangerous pills inside (and yes, people do go to parties with cough medicine – it was called “Robo-Tripping” when I was in college) but they don’t have huge tie-dye banners hanging on the outside walls and Bob Marley blasting.
They’re flaunting the concept of “medical” in California at some dispensaries and that’s not what we’re after right now. If marijuana gets the same legal status of alcohol we can talk about it, but until we get there it’s not appropriate.
Someone is very naive of what *some* over the counter meds and *many* persriptions meds can do.
Oxycontin is referred to as hillybilly heroin, morphine essentially IS morphine, cocaine is used medically, the synthetic things like ativan, xanax and other pharmacueticals…
They are ALL HIGHLY addictive – FAR more addictive than marijuana – even at pharmaceutical doses and uses. They ALL produce FAR more of a high, and a higher level of impairment.
Marijuana can be behaviorally addictive, in the same way watching tv or gambling or even the internet can be addicting. But not in the same way those pharmaceuticals are addicting.
I wonder if anyone has the stats on how many people eventually referred to rehab for pharma addictions started with medically perscribed doses – and many never move beyond that dose, but still develop the chemical depedence – an issue not present with marijuana.
