Is it better to smoke marijuana and breastfeed or formula feed?
A friend of mine’s sister is planning on breastfeeding but she smokes marijuana. Should I tell her to just formula feed? Or do the benefits of breastmilk out weigh the risks. I know it’s really none of my business but I really want to say something to my friend. It’s her sister so she should be the one to talk to her not me.
While the legal gap decreases with every state victory, there remains a prevalent misconception that marijuana is a... Read More »

She should just stop smoking while she’s breastfeeding.
Found this from the Sick Kids Hospital website:

Cigarette smoking is not recommended in nursing mothers. Nicotine and its major metabolite are detectable in milk. Smoking should be avoided while breast-feeding because it has been associated with infantile colic, lowered maternal prolactin levels and consequently, earlier weaning.
Street drugs can be very potent such that even very small amounts can have pharmacological activity and adverse effects on the infant. It is suggested that breast-feeding be at least temporarily delayed after maternal use of these agents and caution should be used to avoid infant exposure to smoke fumes. Infants may experience toxicity after maternal cocaine use,and marijuana use has been associated with slower motor development at one year of age.

You’re right, it’s none of your business. This is a touchy subject. If she’s all all natural hippie mama, she will probably get very offended if you just flat out “told her” as you put it to formula feed. She’s going to do what she will do and it won’t necessarily harm her baby to have pot in her system. It is controversial.
It’s not your place. It’s her child, you can’t make someone formula feed!
SHE AND HER BABY WILL BE FINE! Moms in the 70’s smoked pot and breastfed and even smoked it while pregnant( and my mom did with all three kids and breastfed) Kids from the 70’s came out fine!!! The difference between pot and “street drugs” is pot grows out of the ground, it does not contain pharmecutical ingredients. The baby will be fine. trust me.
it really depends. like that link said up there, you don’t really know what’s in marijuana and other things could be mixed into it. the reason cigarettes are ‘safe’ (notice the ‘quotes’ :)) is because there’s not going to be the chance of cocaine being sprinkled on top of it like there is with marijuana, because it’s a street drug. cigarette use while breast feeding is still better than cigarette use while formula feeding but with marijuana, there hasn’t been enough testing and studies. I do know that with marijuana and breast feeding, the THC is detectable through a babies urine which is something I wouldn’t want to be paranoid about myself…
anyways, I personally wouldn’t smoke marijuana while breast feeding because I think the bigger problem would be actually caring for my baby while impaired. most websites are very ANTI marijuana smoking but it’s been used medicinally for hundreds and thousands of years — really it’s that mother’s business and I’m sure she’s not going to be the first mother to do that unfortunately. I’m sure that the baby will be alright, but it’s kind of sucky to have a mother who makes those kinds of decisions while breast feeding (and while pregnant?). just my .02 🙂

Formula feed. God, formula is not rat poison.
the benefits DO NOT outweigh the risks. wow some people i tell ya…stupid as shit…shouldve never had kids!!!
if i were you, i’d probably say something but i dont think id tell the sister what to do.
if shes going to breastfeed she shouldn’t smoke. if she does she probably should just formula feed…..
whatever you eat while breastfeeding the baby will eat and for all these stupid people on here to say its okay truly shows how honest-to-god ignorant they are.
it can cause so many mental disabilities its unreal.
then again, you cant stop a stupid person from being stupid. you can only try to help a poor helpless baby who DOESNT deserve this.
That depends.
Is she a recreational user, the occasional joint, bong hit, what have you, to relax or just veg out? Or is she a total and complete stoner?
If the former then I don”t really see a problem with her nursing and smoking pot, as long as the same precautions that most take with cigarettes are followed (smoke outside, wash hands, never around baby, etc).
If the latter then I’d be concerned about her ability to take care of her baby while high. As a former heavy smoker myself, I can tell you that there’s no way I could care for a newborn while in the slow reflex haze of a constant high.
The long term effects of infant THC exposure via breastmilk are unknown, could be good, could be bad, could be nothing.
Being pro-pot myself, I don’t see a problem with an occasional toke out back while baby naps. Being a mom, I do have a problem with mom being attached to a bong while neglecting her baby. It all depends on her usage.
Either way, it isn’t really your place, nor her sister’s, to tell her how she should feed her baby.
you need to do the right thing and tell her to quit that nasty habit or called child protective services. Some people should not have kids because they are so selfish. I hope they detect it in her urine and take that child away because she really doesn’t deserve a baby if she has these bad habits,
It is very common in some other countries to smoke while nursing, and I know several moms who have done it and there kids are fine. I am not condoning it. I am not against smoking marijuana at all, I personally would not while I was nursing my daughter. I think if she smokes all day long everyday as much as I advocate nursing, formula might be the better choice, but a couple tokes in the evening and the baby will most likely be fine. But if she smokes all day everyday someone should probably be there to help her with the child, again not against marijuana but be real it can effect your judgment and when you have newborn you need to be as sharp as possible. You don’t want to sleep through your baby crying, even if you gave formula this would be an issue. See if you can convince her to cut back as much as possible. If she only smokes on occasion nursing is still WAY BETTER than formula, IN MY OPINION- I am not a doctor, and if she were on meth, coke, anything else other than marijuana FORMULA all the way.
