Codeine is an opiate. It is derived from the opium poppy plant – like morphine and heroin.
Marijuana comes from the cannabis family — an entirely different group of plants with an entirely different set of chemicals in them.
Contrary to what others have said, marijuana is NOT a narcotic. Narcotics are drugs that induce sleep — such as the products of the opium poppy.
