I want a medical marijuana license here in California. The problem is that I will be a firefighter in the future when I am not smoking anymore. When I apply, will it show up on my backround check?

If your health is so poor that you feel compelled to smoke marijuana, I don’t think you would pass the physical tests to become firefighter.
But generally, no, doctor’s prescriptions are not part of a public record that can be found in a background check.
The taking of some drugs, even if they are legal, prevent you from doing certain things. For example…even if a doctor gives you a shot of morphine for pain, you can not legally drive a car for 4-8 hours after that because you are impaired.
Even if you have a “license” to smoke pot, you can not be a fireman at the same time. Pot impairs you and the last thing anyone needs is an impaired fireman.
Your plan as stated is pretty lame. If you are in such poor shape that only pot can help you, you are definitely not in shape to be a fireman. Now or later.
When they do a background check, they check for past licenses issued by the state. Drivers License. Private Pilot License. Concealed Weapon Permit….and yes…..your medical MJ license will show up too. That will lead them to question your health and when you tell them you had a medical condition that ONLY pot could help, you can kiss being a fireman goodbye.
I think you need to make a choice.
If pot is that important to you, forget about being a fireman. Try fry cook at MacDonald’s.
If you really want to be a fireman, then forget the pot, legal or not.
Ordinarily, your prescription for medical marijuana would not show up on a background check. It would be treated as any other prescription and your medical records are protected by privacy laws.
The problem here, however, is that you are considering an occupation that requires a medical check as well. For obvious reasons, firefighters are required to be physically fit and mentally sound. The marijuana itself would not pose a problem, but the condition for which you obtained the medical marijuana prescription might. Medical marijuana is only supposed to be prescribe for serious illnesses. Virtually every valid medical reason for using marijuana would render you unfit for duty as a firefighter.
