I have a friend who is against prop 19, but drinks alcohol. Does this seem hypocritical to anyone else?
My friend is a parent worried about DUI’s involving marijuana if it becomes legal. This same friend is a bit of a boozer. Shouldn’t an advocate for safer American streets be anti-alcohol too?
Thoughts?

There is no law against being hypocrite…
yes he is a hypocrite
alcohol is more dangerous than marijuana
There was a passage in Tom Sawyer that talked about Aunt Polly being against gambling, drinking, swearing, etc., but not smoking ‘cos she did that herself. 8^)
I think it’s reasonable to worry that the legalization of marijuana might lead to increased use, more DUIs, more kids showing up for school stoned, more truck drivers, cops, firemen, etc. being stoned, etc. etc. I don’t worry about those things, but I don’t think it’s totally unreasonable to be concerned.
But in the US, anti-pot people, most of what they ‘know’ is wrong. We’ve all been raised with the idea that pot is a ‘narcotic’, it’s addictive, it destroys your brain or makes you violent or crazy or even just really lazy and irresponsible. People who have actual experience with the stuff know this is all bulls*it, but without actual exposure to pot you’d tend to believe what you were told about it. Tobacco smokers figure ‘Well, they say tobacco is dangerous, but it hasn’t killed me yet. But look at all the damage pot does, that I read about!’
Well it’s easier to regulate and tax alcohol than it is to tax something you can grown yourself. How can the government tax the growth of plants when there is already widespread use. How do they tax a person who can grown marijuana in their house, or in their back yard? Law enforcement has to have a search warrant to get into your residence or in your backyard (if it’s not in plain sight).
The government is not going to get this influx of tax revenue that they think they are going to get. Also, there are no current laws on the books that would make it illegal to drive a vehicle after smoking marijuana. Just because there is widespread use of marijuana nowadays doesn’t mean it should be legalized. If popularity of use is a prerequisite to legalization; should cocaine, heroin and Lsd have been legalized in the 60’s? Would that have been beneficial to society, having all those extra dollars…
I don’t think it’s hypocritical because the law itself is incomplete. There is a lot that isn’t included in the law that should be addressed. The big thing about this legalization issue is the fact that It’s still against federal law, so people can still be arrested for it. If the law was complete and answered most logical questions to the issue, and it was actually possible to generate a significant amount of money in tax dollars from it (which won’t happen), then I would be all for it (even though I don’t smoke marijuana and never have).
Hope that wasn’t too long winded for you.
Your friend has issues. But many people who drink are against legalizing marijuana. Mostly because they are misinformed about the true nature of the plant and it’s affects.
I absolutely thinks its hypocrtical. Even with the current marijuana use rates (Which is HIGH), less than a fraction of 1% of all Duis involved marijuana use alone. And that is even with a zero tolerance policy that essentially calls any trace of thc in your blood a dui.
