How long before marijuana renders a man infertile?
My husband has been smoking marijuana for nearly two or two and a half years now, and for the last year he’s been smoking basically every day large quantitites.
He’s young though, only 19.
And we’re thinking about having a baby.
Will this be impossible to do?
While the legal gap decreases with every state victory, there remains a prevalent misconception that marijuana is a... Read More »

Marijuana does lower the body’s need to create testosterone (since that hormone is more of agressive mood maker, and marijuana lowers aggression). It does no permanent damage, but males who use marijuana have lower sperm counts until they stop.
So while you are trying to get pregnant, he can take a few weeks off to have a normal sperm count.
Marijuana does not lower sperm count enough to make a significant difference in fertility, it is only so well know that it does lower it because every negative aspect marijuana has is “hyped up” to make it sound like a bad drug when in reality it is a very benign substance.
Marijuana does not lower sperm count. It can have a slight effect on the behavior of sperm but it’s fairly insignificant unless the man already has a very low sperm count.
I don’t know what you consider a “large quantity” of weed but I suggest he starts to moderate his intake. While I am a huge advocate of marijuana I think moderation is very important to balance a healthy lifestyle and I believe that if one is trying to have a baby it’s even more important to moderate.
So, while it won’t have any real effect on his sperm count, he should still minimize his intake if you plan to have a baby with him.

My father smoked pot for 35 years before my mother became pregnant with me and my brother smoked for 10 years before his son was born.
Please reconsider having a baby at 19 if your boyfriend is still smoking pot.
