How could I get started on getting a medical marijuana card while uninsured in Oregon?
So I’m 20 years old and have rarely done marijuana. I had migraines as a child, and while they were few and far between during my teenage years, they are coming back with a vengeance and I don’t know why. I’m uninsured and have never been to a doctor regarding this. I don’t enjoy taking pills and I’d rather suffer than start. Are there any compassionate groups out there that assist people like me? Do all doctors discriminate against people my age?
While the legal gap decreases with every state victory, there remains a prevalent misconception that marijuana is a... Read More »

I’m 20 and have had migraines since I was 9. Severe enough that I often end up in the ER. In a few days now I’ll end up getting nerves in the back of my head numbed. I’m not entirely sure if they’ll give you medical marijuana for migraines as it’s hard to be proven. I’ve gone to every doctor, neurologist, hospital, etc for the past three years and not once has this come up.
Search the web for sites that help you get medical marijuana. They have lists and contacts for doctors who are down with the herbal and understand your concern for taking pain medication (I hate it, too). Good luck!
Under Oregon law you must have medical documentation that proves that you suffer from one of the conditions for which Oregon permits the use of Medical Marijuana. While “migraines” themselves do not qualify you, the ”severe pain’ that you suffer with a migraine could qualify you – IF you have doctor notes (chart notes) that indicate the level and severity of the pain. Without that medical documentation, there is not much chance of getting a card.
I know. Without insurance, those doctor visits are tough to accommodate, budget-wise. But the law in Oregon is strict – and clear. I recommend you try establishing care with one of the many low-income/sliding scale medical clinics that are all throughout Oregon. The medicos there will automatically try and prescribe you pills. Take them or not, as you prefer.
Frequently, those low income clinics are dependent on Federal funds to remain operating, and they are afraid if they sign for Medical Marijuana cards, the Feds will yank their funding. So while you go there to establish your medical history, they probably will not sign your recommendation (the paper that authorizes you to use Medical Marijuana.) After you have established a file with the low-income clinic, go to one of the specialized Medical Marijuana offices/clinics (all over the state -see Oregon Cannabis Connection or a similar paper for names and addresses), take your records from the low-income clinic, and proceed with the card process.
I work for one of the Medical Marijuana Clinics in Southern Oregon, and our doctors do not have any particular prejudice against any patient based on their age. It is the lack of a medical history that causes the road-blocks, not your age, most often.
