How come people don’t want Prop 19 (legalization of recreational use of marijuana) to pass in California?
I’m going to vote yes on Prop 19, but I just wanted some feedback from people who DON’T want marijuana legalized in California.
If you’re voting no on Prop 19 (or would vote no if you lived in CA), what are your reasons?

they think potheads will run wild and hit children in the drive through, allow themselves to be raped at parties, or melt into useless puddles on the couch
How come? Because they are misinformed. They still believe the 70-year-old lies that pot will make you crazy enough to turn and kill your best friend and wife. Those who are of the baby boomer generation still believe it will cause cancer.
It amazes me. I heard the argument by opponents to concealed carry laws time and time again say that if the law passes “there will be blood in the streets”….then when laws are passed allowing concealed carry, the crime goes down and they refused to admit it.
It’s just indicative of a misinformed populace who has bought into some media or government or church’s propaganda or agenda.
The FACT that weed is much safer than alcohol should provide the means to apply common sense. When used responsibly, there is nooooo problem with it.
Thanks for voting ‘yes.’
@taxpayer: “With marijuana legalized, all your employees go out for smoke break and a buzz.” — You must be one of those CCW opponents I referred to…. It’s disingenuous to completely remove the element of responsibility from the equation.
The hook that proponents offer is, “look at all the tax money!!!!” Also, police will not have to arrest people for using a drug that’s readily available.
Taxes – they use the same rationale for casino’s. Taxes and jobs. The benefit that the state gets from taxes doesn’t even surface as a rounding error.
Suppose you’re an employer. With marijuana legalized, all your employees go out for smoke break and a buzz.
Manufacturer – Accidents and law suits by employees who were buzzed on the job.
Retail – Customers who are served by buzzed employees.
People that will be voting No on Prop 19 are Misinformed people, anyone working in the beer industry or booze, illegal and legal Marijuana growers and sellers. If prop 19 passes all of your local weed men go out of business! Too bad for them but we need less exspensive pot.
Vote Yes on 19! End the war on Marijuana!
I agree with the majority of answers… those voting no are largely misinformed.
Take for example the minority answer..
he thinks everyone will get high at work. Tell me how many people drink at work? I mean, really. With all the drugs available from over the counter, unregulated supplements and perscription meds. Marijuana is the least dangerous, the least addictive. How many people currently come to work, with the over abundance of easily available drugs that produce a stronger high????
Go read the dea’s website and information they give on marijuana. Its the same incredibly biased information they have been giving out for at least 3 generations. That is starting to talk about people who actually believe their gov, believe laws are for their safety, and have never read the cited studies and know nothing about marijuana or horticulture.
For example, one of their warnings is how much stronger marijuana is now than it was in the 60s. They almost always cite a thc content of around 5% and 30% (give or take). What they fail to tell you, and what anyone who knows anything about growing anything CAN tell you, is that is the difference between plants that have mated, producing seeds, and those that havent. Its the same process behind seedless watermelons and grapes, behind the eggs we eat and many many other uses through out our food supply. That is even part of the “genetically modified” farming – they simply are not allowing the plants to pollenate and bare seeds, and are creating feminized seeds.
They even misrepresent when marijuana was illegalized, citing a year that congress changed the scheduling on it, 1970, NOT the year it was criminalized, 1935? However, instead of stating that technicality, they simply say congress enacted laws against marijuana in 1970.
They scream that marijuana is not medicine because nothing smoked can be a med. They neglect to mention that no doctor recomends smoking, that they recommend vaporizing and cooking in food, using precisly measured doses at specific times, the same they would take any other med. They also neglect to mention that the dea, fda, ama, and several other medical orgs that are against medical marijuana fully support and get profits from marinol and other generic synthetic thc pill that are sold in every pharmacy nation wide. In places they do mention it, they claim it has been reformulated to not produce a high, so no one wants it, making medical marijuana nothing but a joke.
The problem with that is that it DOES produce a high, different, more numbed out, but its there. The other problem is that the real reason no on wants it is because it costs 50-100 times the cost of real marijuana.
See all this information they leave out? THAT is the source of the misinformation
One of the provisions of Prop 19 is that it allows a locality town/city to decide if they are going to allow marijuana sales in their city. This “could” negatively effect a medical marijuana patients access to medicinal marijuana. For instance, if the proposition passed and then City of Los Angeles decides to not allow marijuana sales in LA…how would this effect medical marijuana patients and their ability to secure marijuana from dispensary/collectives in LA. A huge issue is if Prop 19 would eliminate access points for marijuana. Hope this helps.
Also, as an aside a comment was posted that the only supporters of Prop 19 are smokers…that is not true. I believe marijuana is as benign as alcohol and that each person should have the choice to participate or not. I am not a marijuana or alcohol user. I used both when I was younger but outgrew both when I had a family, established a career and realized neither was “doing it” for me. I support Prop 19 because I believe a better way to handle marijuana would be to provide education and understanding of what it is, how it effects a person and then to regulate it so their are legitimate access points (versus back room drug dealers) that could be audited and watched. By opening it up you can do all of this.
for everyone that has doubts about prop. 19, this video should change your mind. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9077214414651731007#
