How can I tell if my bareroot tree is alive?
I ordered a bareroot tree from Amazon from a guy that had a ton of great reviews. It’s a black walnut tree and pretty much just looked like a stick with some buds and a root bulb. The bulb looked fine (as far as I can tell) and the rest of the tree didn’t appear dry). So I planted it in a pot with some potting soil and may have overwatered it (I gave it a few cups of water, but it all drained out cause I just put soil in the pot) and have since left it alone (it’s been a few days and the soil beneath the top soil is still moist). The tree has not changed in appearance. Should I contact the seller? How can I tell if it’s healthy?
I have two black walnut saplings that have been in the ground for 2 years. They have not yet budded out, but there are small swells where the leaves will soon be coming out in the next few weeks. I think, in your zeal to see your new tree prosper, you may be a little impatient. Keep your soil damp but not soggy and place it in a place where it will some filtered sun. Then just give it TIME! Good luck.
Use your finger nail to scratch the bark back a little bit. You should see a yellowish green color on the inner bark. If there is no color the tree is deceased.
Take your finger nail and scratch the bark a lil if you see green its still alive. Sometimes when a tree is dug up bare root it may shock the tree causing it to look like it was dyeing give it till next year and the tree will come back a lil better.
well, of COURSE it hasn’t changed in TWO DAYS!!!… this is a tree, not a weed!!…. it may not change how it looks for a month!…. trees grow SLOWLY…. that’s how they live so long!!…. get it out in the sunlight, keep the soil moist and WAIT!…. it should show a few leaves soon… relatively soon… like in a few weeks!!….
