How can I make a living growing medicinal marijuana?
One can now grow and possess marijuana in over 10 states with a doctor’s recommendation. That number will keep growing and so will the consumers’ demand for high quality medicinal grade marijuana. Cannabis may likely become the most profitable cash crop, selling at thousands of dollars per pound.
This is a pretty new market and I want to get my spot in it before it skyrockets. How can I start a farm and grow marijuana for the increasing number of medical users out there?
Living amongst fields of marijuana and rolling in dough? You know that sounds awesome.
I assume you live in a state where this is legal, or soon will be legal. To the best of my knowledge, this is how it works in Colorado:
First, you’ll need to get a medical marijuana caregiver card. Second, there aren’t going to be any “fields” any time soon. Assuming you don’t want to devastate the environment like the illegal outdoor growers in national forests, you will be growing indoors under lights using hydroponics.
You would want to start a small hydroponics operation until you know what you are doing. If you can handle a small operation, you can start to expand. There is a point where maintaining the operation will take all of your time, or at least as much time as you can or want to spend. At that point, you need to stop increasing the size of the operation or start hiring helpers, who must each have a caregiver card.
Caution: Many cities are beginning to close down medical marijuana “compassion centers.” We are still a long way away from fully legal (especially federally legal) marijuana grow and distribution for any reason, medical or otherwise. A couple examples of cities where this is happening are Los Angeles, CA and Boulder, CO.
