help! my cacti are dying…?
i have several cacti at my house, they are mini cacti, when i bought them the seller put them all in a small pot. But several weeks after i bought them, some of my cacti begin to change color, they lost their green and start to wither. I put them at a nice place at my house where they can take enough sunlight and i only water them once a week, so i’m at total loss here. Are they sick? Can anyone help me?
they could be getting too much water.
i water mine once a month
Yeah, you were watering them too much. They need a lot of sun and they need very little water – like once a month, not once a week. And make sure the soil is really pebbly so it drains well.
Unfortunately, once they start to change color, the damage is done. Cacti are like evergreens – they look OK when they are sick, so once they start to look bad – it is too late to fix them, usually. Maybe one or two will make it, but maybe none of them – sorry.
It does sound as though they’ve drowned. If you get more cacti, make sure each pot has a hole in it, and the soil is sandy and pebbly. Don’t let the pots stand in water. I have cacti that I’ve had for at least 20 years. They rarely need repotting, I only repot when the cactus gets so big that it’s top heavy and tips the pot over.
Sounds like they are getting too much water. Does their container have a drain hole? Even if it does, the seller may have damaged the roots when they were put in the small pot. The damaged roots couldn’t absorb water and began to rot. Also, cacti are sensitive to rot and if the pot they were put in once held a cactus which rotted and was not sterilized, the rot could get transferred to the new cacti. I recommend getting new cacti and a new pot and new soil. Don’t re-use anything, even the shovel or gloves you may have touched the rotted cacti with.
