Not this time, maybe next time, maybe the time after that… but the tide is unmistakeable. Only an idiot would bet against recreational pot being legal somewhere in the U.S. within the next five years.
Interesting legal questions will arise if/when the feds challenge it. And political ones. Sure, federal law trumps all. We fought the first modern-style war in human history over that — it’s settled. But how much $ would any federal administration, pro- or anti- drug war, be willing to spend on chasing people and prosecuting crimes in states and in municipalities where local officials allocate ZERO dollars for cooperation activities? And at that, “crimes” on which taxes and stock dividends are being paid?
Anyway, I have a feeling too many national and international corporates are getting ready with production facilities, and a government based on capitalist money power will always fold when faced with opposition based on capitalist money power.
You will live to see legal “cafes” in major American cities, and packets of marijuana sealed in commercial-type packaging with brand-name logos.
But the “romantic criminal”-outlaw thing is dead. Even the old hippie semi-political half-a$$ leftist rebel thing will soon be dead.
The giants of this trade will wear suits and ties, and attend board meetings.
And contribute to the Chamber of Commerce, and to the Police Support Association, and to the Republican and Democratic Parties.
..
It’ll be back, don’t even worry about it. And yes, it will eventually pass. Probably more importantly, it served to raise awareness and will most likely act as model legislation for other states seeking to legalize it.
