Do you think its fair for Michael Phelps to lose some of his sponsors for smoking marijuana?
I’m not an advocate for either side. I just want to know what the fuss is about.
Also, isn’t it the sponsors responsibility to do a thorough background check and drug test (regularly) on someone they want to sponsor?
I would much rather be safe than sorry in their position.

Well some of his sponsors are going to pull away from him because of the fear and stigma associated with marijuana.
But those are the same ones who have no balls when it comes to trying new things and care too much about popularity among the masses over actual athletic ability.
It doesn’t look good. It’s the sponsors’ money. Do they think they are getting a good deal here? Apparently they don’t. It’s not the message they want sent out. Phelps should have considered it since he’s a celebrity. People would be waiting for him to do something stupid.
Yes, I think it’s fair. He is a role model. Smoking pot is not cool. It’s not legal. Most pot heads are losers. The ones I know are – I don’t know that many so I could be wrong. But the ones I do know are total losers. No one to want to be like.
Absolutely. He is a criminal druggie. There is no excuse. No one should sponser him unless they support the illegal use of drugs.
He’s a public figure and popular. No one wants to be assoicated with drug using, even if some consider smoking pot acceptable.
So he should know better.
YES
The pretended fuss is about an illegal drug, which is so commonly used as to not warrant a mention.
I would sue the news of the world for loss of income due to their invasion of his privacy. Twenty million pounds would be good and help put the paper out of business for ever. Go Michael.
But of course i have love for Phelps, i love swimmers and the whole sport.
I dont really think its fair that just because he’s trying to let lose and be a college student means that he get things taken away from him.
A lot of people have or do smoke so i think everyone just needs to chill out.
What’s the fuss about??? Phelps is supposed to be a role model; an American athletic star. He should have more integrity and more intelligence than that. He SHOULD loose sponsorships. Just add this looser to the list of athletes who also lost their glory due to crime, drugs, scandal. Where does it end?
The only ones that would love to sponsor Phelps now will probably be the manufacturers of drug paraphernalia.
Whatever anyone else thinks, sponsors are squeamish when it comes to their star promoters showing signs of blemish – however small.
They want only super-humans, and Michael Phelps is about as close as anyone might come to such a description. When one is regarded as such, it becomes a crime to behave like the rest of us ordinary humans !
He is no different than any other athlete and should be treated the same way. He made a choice to be a public figure and must assume the responsibilities that come with being in the ‘public eye’. He brought this upon himself and must deal with the consequences of his actions. If the average citizen was caught in this same situation, they would not be given any kind of pardon for their actions.
I would dump him if I was his sponsor. That guy is a hero to kids, you know? He’s the closest thing they have to a real live super hero – and there he is doing drugs!
People were signing their kids up for swimming lessons in droves during the Olympics because of this guy! This is so awful and disappointing! I am deeply saddened by the poor choices the Michael is making with his life. I hope he turns his life around and gets clean and sober for good. First a DUI, now drug photos? I can’t believe any sponsors have kept him. They may dump him quietly later on once all of this has dies down though, that would be my guess.
