Conservatives: What do you stand for?
I understand free-market and limited government. But if your against government intervention why are you so against marijuana legalization, gay marriage etc.. It seems to me that if you advocate personal responsibility you’d want people to make there own choices without the government being involved.

Actually, I’m a Conservative and I am in fact pro-choice and pro-gay marriage for those reasons. However, by your rationale, murder and rape should be legal too as it’s government intervention when you arrest the perpetrators. Conservatives believe in LIMITED government and even argue amongst themselves where that line should be. They are not however for no government. That is an anarchist.
You’re mixing up conservatives and libertarians. Libertarians believe in actually keeping government out of people’s lives. Conservatives want to legislate their morality.

I am conservative and am not against gay marriage, legal immigration, legalization of drugs, or stem cell research.
Being conservative or liberal does not mean you are pigeon holed into every possible political view of any group.
I believe in less government intervention, less taxes, more personal responsibilities, and more freedoms.
Personally the government should build the roads, protect the shores, and leave me alone. I used to think they should deliver the mail, but I have changed my mind about that one.

Those are states rights issues and you are answering your own questions.
The point is for the federal government to STAY OUT of our business… That means, let the states decide for themselves.
If you make a federal law concerning something, you have taken away the rights of the various stats to regulate that something…

This goes both ways. Conservatives tend to be against government intervention in economic issues, but more for it when it comes to social issues. Conversely, liberals tend to be for more government intervention on economic issues, but against it when it comes to social issues.
Ex: Conservatives are for privatizing social security, but against abortion. Liberals want the government to control social security, but are against abortion restrictions.
Government protecting it’s citizens from destructive practices is not government intervention . I don’t recall government telling any homosexual they cant be homosexual, Their just saying were not going to recognize it as normal nor pay you benefits like it is . God bless.

I see why you’re confused about this. Conservatives stand for, well, conserving ways of life that they feel are necessary or special to our culture and our way of life. The institution of marriage being one of these as well as marijuana. These acts themselves are not what scares conservative people rather than the thought of a less structured society. These subjects bring up a fear that our nation is going to throw everything sacred and traditional to the wind and that a frivolous “everything goes” attitude will be replacing it. Conservatives are here to protect a particular element of morality and they serve their purpose just as liberals serve their purpose of changing certain traditions when it really has become time for these things to change with the times. I myself see the purpose of conservatives and liberals and am a Libertarian because of it. This basically means that I pull beliefs from both ends of the spectrum and believe in freedom of an individual to do as they wish without their intrusion on an others freedoms. I can’t speak for all conservatives; and yes I favor free market and limited government. But actually I support marijuana legalization as well as gay marriage. Some actually classify me as a Libertarian. However, I will always be pro life; due to the fact that murder is wrong and immoral. A woman’s privacy does NOT trump another human being’s life.

The fallacy in many people’s thinking is that all conservatives are against progress and change. Actually, this is untrue. We see change for change’s sake as pointless; and we are against change that compromises our principles and values that we stand for.
I favor family values of a happy, loving household where the spouses stay loyal and the family is brought up in God. If that is possible with a gay couple; I’m all for it.
And while many conservatives would have different core beliefs and values that they believe in and stand firm on; every conservative does have something they want to stand firm on… or “conserve”.
I’m tired of saying this, but there are a lot of conservatives who have no problem with gay marriage. I’m one of them. I don’t understand why it’s even an issue with the federal government. It should be a local thing, imo, the same way heterosexual marriage is. I know too many gay people to think they should be denied the social benefits of marriage.
I wouldn’t mind having marijuana legalized as long as alcohol was legal. Again, state law should apply. They are pretty much the same to me. I would, however, send people caught DWI to jail for a very long time. There has to be some accounting for the increased risk of impaired driving. But anyone who wants to smoke weed is going to find a way, it seems to me.

Gay marriage? I’m not for calling it marriage, but if you want a legal union, I’m fine with that.
Marijuana is a tricky subject. While it has its medicinal uses, it can also be a stepping stone to other harder drugs. Same could be said for tobacco, but a line must be drawn somewhere.
Abortions? I do not agree with it being used as a form of birth control. If that’s why it needs to be dumb, then maybe you’re too dumb to be having sex in this day and age with all the forms of contraceptives available or just to lazy to actually abstain. However, there will be times when it has to be done, like in time of medical issues or rape. Rape is unlawful sex and why should a raped woman be forced to carry a child she didn’t ask for? While some people would say the child didn’t ask to be conceived, their is no pure black and white in this discussion. But, I am also against late term partial birth abortion. Those are horrible, and I see it as a form of murder.
I do advocate personal responsibility. It’s amazing how much trouble you can stay out of if you take care of yourself.
They justify this contradiction through a variety of rationalizations when just ignoring it won’t work, all of which come down to and are the logical equivalent of “because I said so.” There’s no rational basis for it that holds any water.
Interestingly enough, this is a good example of conservatism’s irreconcilable internal contradictions – contradictions which will inevitably lead to its collapse as a popular ideological and political paradigm. Ideologies which are so internally contradictory invariably produce poor practical results; logical inconsistencies mean that a claim doesn’t mesh with reality, and reality-detached public policies don’t work.
As to why these contradictions really exist – because greedy, amoral, cynical Wall Street businessmen/scumbags decided to more expediently manipulate the political process by having politicians sympathetic to free market fundamentalism pander to Christian fundamentalism. Thus was born the modern conservative movement.
How about only the conservatives answer, Too many morons that want to chime in on what they “think” conservatism is. One person actually said that conservatives want to legislate morality. For those idiots…yes IDIOTS…out there that actually believe that…how about shutting up long enough to give me an example ? You won’t find one because its never been done. Conservatives realize there is a line to be drawn between religion and the state. You can’t legalize morality and have a free country. Sure, you can look down on people, blast them for being immoral, protest, shun, or even discriminate to a certain extent against people that just don’t meet the “rules” of an organization, but NEVER has morality ever been legislated. The closest you will find are people that don’t believe in abortion that do not want to be a part of it….meaning they don’t want their tax dollar supporting the killing of children. They have that right to feel that way, they have a right to protest…but they never brought about legislation to banish all abortion country wide.
So stop the biased stupidity and lying. At least if you hire a true believing in the religion and morality, they will act decent, give you a fair chance to express your views and try to represent you as best they can for the best possible outcome. It is your pathetic world of lying, cheating, immorality, compromise, deception and lacking either standards or the enforcement of standards that has resulted in the government officials raking the American citizens over the coals, cheating people out of liberty and money and not having to care about what the voters think.
It is why your children aren’t patriotic, It is why people can get by with making unpatriotic and un American accusations and attack citizens.
Conservatives believe in freedom, free markets, that you have to work for what you get…..no free handouts. That you should be responsible for your actions. That you should earn what you get and that the government should me minimal. That they exist to get things out of your way for opportunity and maintain freedom…not steal tax money from citizens, fleece the flock sort of speak and hand out your hard earned money to who they designate or think it should go to. There is no provision in conservatism for socialistically based “fairness”. There’s compassion for the “truely” poor, but reality has shown that there are too many scamming the system, and to accomodate the scammers by stealing from the producers of the nation is sheer idiocy. If you keep taking the air out of a rolling tire, eventually it will go flat, and it will stop. Socialism has crushed every great nation its been tried in for those that do’nt know history. China is the last hold out…..then again….they have a laundry list of human rights violations and overuse of military to subdue those speaking out against it.
Conservatism in it self has no standing on Marijuana and Gay rights (as concerned with marriage) or really the matter of pro life/choice issue.
As a conservative, I believe what the constitution says. I believe that we are a republic of sovereign states (each state a micro country unto itself). The federal governemt was set up to do very specific things as established by the constitution.
They are:
Defend this country and its people from all enemies.
Act as our foreign diplomats, and
to settle the disputes between states.
It even spelled out what the important issues at the time were (8 of the 10 first amendments). It spelled out the restrictions on the federal government and where the peoples rigths came from (and it was not the government) and in the 9th amendment (The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.) basically stated that the constitution was not to deny rights, and the 10th (The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.) said that everything else was up to the states or the individual.
We feel that the federal government has way overstepped its bounds, and undereducated, uneducated, not caring people have let it happen.
What we do stand for is small minimally intrusive government, to protect us from enemies, and those that would infringe on our rights.
“Gay Rights” _ I believe that the government should get out of the marriag business. I think the government should treat any couple the same based upon contractual obligations. I feell that the church should do the Marrying. The government stole it from the church anyway. If a couple can find a priest, minister, rabii etc and a church to marry them, then it is between them, there church and there god. This comes down to equal treatment under the law, and does not infringe upon the role of the church.
Abortion – as a conservative I feel that the Federal government should never have gotten involved on a bogus case to begin with. It should go back to the way it was (The states controlling there own laws, for there own states at the behest of the people) (States rights)
Most other things need to go back to the states, with the federal government backing off, and let the sattes, community, individual concern there own affairs without the federal government trying to control all peole in the US.
Personal responsibilty is what this nation was built on. and it is what will again pull this country out of the mess we are in. The federal government is getting in the way.

The current GOP is not the party of Lincoln, and those that truly are conservative know that. They believe in being fiscally prudent, caring for their environment, keeping religion out of politics (and the bedroom) and an overall sense of self-awareness and responsibility. They are progressive and defend their ideals and their morals and do not cow tow to the least among their party who scream the loudest- the squeaky wheels who get the grease. The Democratic party is certainly not perfect either, but the regressive politics of current and former Republican leaders are so extreme that being seen as liberal or Democrat somehow makes one a socialist or Marxist. The two parties have divided themselves so much that they have nearly fallen off their respective ends of the political spectrum. The GOP has much to answer for, and I assume (naive? maybe) that those who are “true” conservatives do not associate themselves with the flag lapel-pin wearing, flag waving, pro-war, pro-death penalty, ethnocentric, anti-intellectualist “conservatives.” That is not America. It is not unpatriotic to be intellectual and intuitive, to ask questions and demand answers, to expect your government to follow through, and to want our country to continue moving forward. Most people want that. I hope.
