Don’t care about what anyone thinks about you. Do your thing man!
Choose your friends better. It’s natural for people who don’t know you well to assume you are like who you hang with.
The phrase “Birds of a feather flock together” came from just such situations.
You must decide which you want, a good reputation or to hang with the friends you’re hanging out with now. You can’t have both.
Reputations are very difficult to clean up, so once you’ve decided, you will have to set your goal, then follow it consistently, without any wavering. If you do that, in time your reputation will change.
If you decide to give up hanging out with the friends you have now, then you should start doing things like join a few groups who are known to do things other than smoke pot, etc. Also, start making new friends in the group you want to be in. It won’t be easy, but it won’t be impossible either. You can do it.
Not sure what a ‘hookah’ is, but if you’re still in school and smoking ANYTHING, then I would say you should stop with the ‘hookah’ and mini cigars. There is also an old saying….”If you lie down with dogs, you’ll wake up with flea’s.” MEANING: If you hang out with people who have a bad reputation, that reputation is going to reflect back on you. If you are truly friends with this guy and he is NOT influencing you to do anything that is not appropriate, then don’t worry so much what others say. Perhaps you see in him something others don’t. HOWEVER, I would also make sure you befriend people with GOOD reputations, as well, as this will also be a reflection on you. So instead of people thinking you’re a pothead, people will simply think you’re a good friend. Even to those with bad reps. In the meantime, you might want to encourage your buddy to clean up his reputation, as well. Hate to say this, but school is only a few short years. But the reputation you create now will literally hang with you for life. Imagine yourself down the road in 10 years. You bump into that sweet little cheerleader you had a mighty crush on in highschool. She’s as attractive and nice as ever, and she STILL won’t go out with you because she still remembers you as “THE POTHEAD!” It’s hard to recover from something like that.
Do you really want to be friends with people that don’t want to get to know the real you? I understand that’s not a good reputation to have though. However, there’s no reason to change the person you are. I wouldn’t suggest changing the way you dress, or who your friends are or anything like that. You are who you are and you should be proud of that.
On the other hand, there are things that you can do to try to get others to see the real you. Try being more outgoing so that people will see that you aren’t necessarily who you hang out with. Just give people an opportunity to see who you are beyond who they think you are. If they can’t see beyond their perceived image of you, then you don’t need or probably want them as your friend.
stop smoking, start dressing better, get your grades up and get new friends
It’s called guilt by association. Once you have a label it is hard to shake. Consider new friends that don’t have that reputation.
