It will depend if he is charged as a minor or adult.
It differs with different states.
But I will give you a true scenario in Wisconsin
My ex actually got caught with 24.1 grams of marijuana.
he went to court and was fined a couple-few hundred dollars.
I have faced the legal system (still am) here in Ohio.
I have gone to court many times, and some people are were faced with some sort of paraphernalia.
Underage drinking ticket and a paraphernalia charge was 1,000 dollars and 180 days (which is the most) it was his first offense, so all 180 days were suspended, and so was like 500 dollars. So I would say that I would tell your friend to save up as much as possible until his court date, ask for a continuance, and hope he gets the money. That is if you have to pay when the amount is given at the court.
I hope I helped you out.
~~~~this is a misdemeanor.
~~~~your friend will most likely get tried as a juvenile.
I can almost garauntee it.
