The main reason marijuana is illegal in America is due to drug companies. Marijuana is very cheap to grow, has several medicinal properties, and very little consequences after the high is gone. Compared to drinking hard alcohol, it is causes much less aggression and bad judgment.
What is happening in cities such as New York, San Francisco, and Austin is the decriminalization of the drug. Where people caught with less than 1 ounce are simply given a ticket. Also, the Obama administration has, just last week, signaled the attorney general to begin moving the focus away from individual drug users and more towards dealers and production facilities.
