the only thing i am confused about are the 4 strings.
are the middle 2 (the base) supposed to be the length you actually want the necklace?
are the longer peices supposed to be twice as long as the base?

the 2 base strands should be a little longer than what you want your final length to be. the longer pieces should be 3x the final length.
You always want the base strings a little longer . It is always better to have too much than too little. If you are making a loop at the beginning by folding it then have one string 2x longer than you the base string and 2x long than the other one and fold at the middle of each one tie a simple knot. There are a lot of different ways to start and end them. Look at macramé sites, and also Chinese knots if you want to be more decorative.
