Marijuana is of course a theme throughout the story, but really this book is about people making their way in life, with many observations of human nature, as well as being full of vivid and expansive descriptions of plants, wildlife, and geography, particularly of the west coast of the United States. Throughout the story, the main characters observe, take part in, and remember many varied sociological phenomena, including a great deal of history from the 1960s in California. There is surprisingly tense plot that keeps you reading, but it is balanced by a quiet philosophical theme throughout which grows more intense and deep toward the end as the action comes to a head. The ending of the book is a surprise, and causes one to reflect back on the story in unexpected ways, leaving a memorable impression.
