Kelly’s Upside Down Vegetable Garden 01
I have been planning to grow vegetables like this all winter and when I saw Jason’s video, I thought it would be fun to document my garden as well. I had to wait a little longer to plant because I live in Springfield Missouri. We tend to have late frosts so I made sure that wasn’t going to happen. What you see on this first video, was planted on May 22, 2009. It is also the first time I have attempted to grow vegetables this way. So if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I am going to do video updates every week or so to show the progress. I hope you enjoy the videos as much as I enjoying working in my garden this year. Take care. Kelly
Just curious did you fill the buckets completely with soil or just half way?
dont leave the tops on they need oxygen 😛
zucchiny squash dont do to good upside down id imagine their pretty big fully grown. will see in 3or4videos hahhaha
Thanks! With the weather we get here sometimes, I chose to go with these brackets because they were the most substantial ones that I could find. I am very impressed with your garden! Wow you guys have been doing a ton of work. I hope my turns out as well. Take care.
Great Job Kelly! I see you used closet rod hooks to support your buckets. That is what my husband used to support the chain link top rail that we used in our hanging system. they are extremely strong and were bolted to 4×4 beams that he screwed into our existing privacy fence. I know that your garden will be producing in no time. If I had known how great planting the tomatoes upsidedown was, I would have started a long time ago. We have tons of fruit set already, Now I am waiting on cukes.
Thank you! I appreciate you looking at my video. I just came in from the garden and I have a bunch more happening and I have put in a few more things. Oh, and thanks for the comment on the yard, I work on it pretty hard also. Kelly
Looks like you are off to a good start. Beautiful yard BTW. 🙂
Great Job Kelly! Thanks for the review on my video, but you’ve got a great upside down garden going yourself! The closet hooks are something that everyone should pay attention too – that’s a great idea to help support the weight of the buckets! Be careful with the larger fruits, as they grow they’ll want to fall from the plant (just from gravity). Just pick them a bit earlier is all. Looks like everything is off to a great start and I’m anxious to see your next video. Happy Gardening!
That makes since about them coming loose from the soil. Squash tend to grow fast above ground than below. You have to wait until they are pretty good size in order for it to work. That is why I am leaving them in the ground buckets for now.
Good stuff. People would benefit from using your idea. I’ve never grown anything before and it’s amazing how addicting it is. Never thought I would say that. It is definitely fun. Be careful when you plant the squash upside down as I had to replant mine 3 times as the stalks kept coming loose from the soil and falling out of the holes. I definitely had to learn as I go….and still am.
I am in Springfield, Missouri. Yeah I couldn’t find brackets that I thought were strong enough so I went to the area in lowes where you can design your own closet. And these particular brackets have extra support and have the hook on the end where the rod goes. It actually worked out pretty well. I am going to add a few things to the garden this week so hopefully I will have something to show everyone on my next posting.
Oh and where are you located?
Your setup is sweet. That closet bracket idea is awesome. It was hard for me to find a hook that would support the weight of everything. I wish I would have thought of that. Goes to show that “normal” garden equipment might not work as well as an original idea. You are right about them quickly growing upright.
I’m really interest to see how your squash/zucchini grows upside down. My yellow squash is doing a lot better than the zucchini. I’m looking forward to your next post.
