Jefferson advocated the cultivation of Hemp, but not as a smokable product.
I believe this was Thomas Jefferson. He actually had acres of marijuana on his plantation. Of course he grew it for the production of materials, not for smoking. It was actually the wood industry that lobbied to make marijuana illegal because marijuana was able to produce paper faster that trees and it did not decemate the forests. Tree industries were set to go out of business, so they forced the US government to make marijuana illegal
George Washington grew hemp on his plantation for clothing and for rope. hemp being similar to pot, i thought i’d mention it.
